I'm hoping the milestone of 'winter storms complete' is done. We spent 4 days in the last week sitting out 30-40 knots of wind while at anchor or while at the dock. There was more than once I wondered why we decided to leave in April.
However, as is always the case, the winter gives way to spring. The storm gives way to smooth seas and consistent breezes.
From Comox, we went to our favorite stomping ground of Drew Bay (Rebecca Spit near Heriot Bay). We were thankful to have found great camaraderie with our fellow Alaska bound cruisers aboard 'Amazing Grace', (sailingamazinggrace.com) who helped fill 4 boat-bound days with shared meals and trip planning.
After a few too many early morning departures we've now completed 258 miles Northwest and crossed several major sailing 'milestones'.
The point where the tides from the pacific shift directions from the Ebb to EAST to the Ebb to WEST; which requires us to pass through a few rapids at slack. For us we went through Okisollo Channel of course!
We navigated the 'infamous' Johnstone strait. While prepped to jump into a protective harbor, we got lucky and made it the whole 50+ miles in one day.
The cat came out in the cockpit while we were underway! She has stopped being angry cat and has decided to play along.
And tonight we find ourselves, nestled between a small islet, a shell midden beach and a bubbling waterfall, with snow capped mountains in the background (off of Havannah Channel). Right! Those rain days, they were totally worth it. The next two weeks we'll be exploring the Broughton Archipelago and soaking it all up before we head to Northern BC and leave Vancouver Island behind in May. Happy Earth Day tomorrow - Hope you can do something good!
